The Fifth Rule of Engagement is to love others. This is what we have been called to do. It is what will change the world…when we put ourselves completely aside for the cause of others. Granted, I can only do this if I am healthy — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. But Christ asks us to put ourselves aside for the sake of our friend, neighbors, and even our enemies.
In the movie Spartacus, our gallant hero is powerful and strong, but he is ashamed that he must battle his fellow gladiators, his only friends, to the death in order to survive. How often do we live life like this? Isn’t this the epitome of the “rat race”? The strong survive! There is only one winner! The early bird gets the worm!
In Jesus’ economy, the least shall be the greatest and the last shall be first. Those who turn the other cheek gain the path of righteousness. Jesus gave his very life for you and me, and he asks the same of us towards our brother.
I came across this video today. Now, I’m not suggesting necessarily that love is all hugs and kisses, or that we all have to walk around with big signs. But I would ask that you watch the faces of those who receive these hugs (and be sure to hit the website and read the account of the lady with the really bad day). You will see the impact of a moment of love given through a free hug.
